Minnie Rayfield and Bertha Sergeant lived on the opposite sides of town but God had placed the same desire in them both... to have a Church of God in Clinton, TN. Unknowingly to them they set out on a mission the same day, on the same bus, to convince the Church of God District Overseer, Reverend B. L. Alford the need for a Church of God in Clinton.
In 1948
Walter E. Webb answered the call of God and started the church with 10 members, hungry for a move of God, on a front porch. Through cold and rain, snow and heat they stayed faithful to the call as they grew to tents in the front lawn.
Six months later, God opened the door for the church to move to a building. It was called the People's Tabernacle. Pastor Webb took out a personal loan for the building. Clinton Utilities refused to turn the lights on calling the church a bunch of "fly-by-nighters."
From front lawns and tents to where we are today... God has been faithful.
